Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why is it important to have my chimney swept?

A. Over time, fuel burning appliances deposit unburned, combustible material in the chimney.  These deposits can cause premature degradation to the chimney, and with wood burning in particular, deposited creosote can lead to a chimney fire. Chimneys with severe build-up of deposits can become blocked, causing the potential hazard of carbon monoxide entering the home.  Sweeping the chimney regularly reduces the likelihood of a chimney fire, but most importantly, it reduces the severity of the chimney fire should one occur.

Q. How often should I have my chimney swept and/or inspected?

A. Both the CSIA and NFPA organizations recommend an annual chimney inspection and sweeping if necessary. The need to sweep the chimney varies significantly depending on the fuel used, appliance age, and the chimney system effectiveness.  For wood burners, the frequency can vary depending on the type of wood being burned and the way it is burned. The average wood burning system is usually due for sweeping after the use of about two cords of wood.

Q. What method does Able Chimney Company use to sweep the chimney?

A.  The chimney is swept either from the inside or the outside of the building depending on a number of factors, including safety considerations, the construction of the building and chimney, the type of appliance, and the type of deposits or creosote that needs to be swept. I use traditional rods and brushes, flexible cleaning systems, or powered rotary cleaning systems, depending on the type of chimney and deposits to be swept.  I use specialized vacuums with dual and HEPA filtration systems to control dust and debris.  I also use floor protection in my work area for tool lay-down and to protect floors from debris.

Q. Are you insured?

A. Yes, Able Chimney Company, LLC carries $1,000,000/2,000,000 in general commercial liability insurance.

Q. When is the best time to have my chimney swept?

A. Able Chimney sweeps chimneys full time, year round, so the chimney can be swept almost anytime.  But, the best time for you to schedule the work is immediately after the heating season.  This assures that you will be ready for the next heating season.  Waiting until the weather turns cold after Labor Day will subject you to long wait times for service.  Most sweeps end up booking weeks to months in advance in the fall.  Also, due to the volume of calls all at once, message machines can fill up, and messages can be lost. So, plan early!
